It is learned from the news coverage of November 22, 2018 that 3 HPG militants died in a bombardment of Turkish Air Force against Qandil area in Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on September 14, 2018.

It is learned from the news coverage of November 22, 2018 that prisoners are forced to stand in line during roll-calls in Antep L Type Prison.

(11/279) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 744 days to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on November 22, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on November 22, 2018, 2 people (Nazan Bozkurt and Mehmet Dersulu) and at 18.00 3 people (Mehmet Dersulu, Nazan Bozkurt and Gülnaz Bozkurt) were detained.

Thus in total 5 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on November 22, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(11/280) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

Türkan Albayrak, who was dismissed from her job at Sarıyer district Health Department, on the grounds of ‘personnel security investigation’ and ‘archive search’, on August 3, 2018; made a press declaration to regain her job on November 22, 2018 and attempted for a sit-in protest in front of Health Department. The police intervened the sit-in and detained Türkan Albayrak. It is learned that Türkan Albayrak was released the same day. It is the 50th time of detention of Türkan Albayrak.

(11/281) Musicians Detained in Adana…

8 people (İmran Akın, İlyas Arzu, Mecit Özlü, Jiyan Savcı, Mizgin Akın, D.Ö., G. H. Ö. and D.S.) including musicians from Mezopotamya Cultural Center which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, are detained in a house raid in Adana on November 22, 2018. It is learned that the reason for detention is an anonymous notice to the police reporting that “someone with a bag has entered the house”.

It is reported that İmran Akın was subjected to physical violence of the police during the raid and was threatened to death by a police holding a gun against his head.

İmran Akın, İlyas Arzu, Mecit Özlü, Jiyan Savcı, Mizgin Akın are released after statement procedures at the police on the same day.

It is learned that D.Ö., G. H. Ö. and D.S. are still under custody.

(11/282) Detained HDP Members in Diyarbakır…

8 members of People’s Democratic Party (HDP), who were detained in Bağlar district of Diyarbakır on November 20, 2018 for distributing leaflets about HDP’s Youth Assembly Congress to be held on November 25, 2018, are released on November 21, 2018. The names of released people: Talip Turan, Mazlum Sönmez, Nalin Dönmez, Kemal Baran, Ceylan Aslan, Erol Daşdelen, Mehmet Yalçın and Reber with unknown surname.

2 people (Şirin A. and Filiz G.) are detained for social media posts in a house raid in Kayseri on November 22, 2018.

(11 /284) The Cases Against Academics Who Are the Signatories of the Petition “We will not be a party to this crime!”…

The separate cases against 3 academicians (PhD Güven Gürkan Öztan and Professor Gülhan Türkay from Istanbul University and Professor Mehmet Rıza Türkay from Marmara University) for signing the petition “We will not be a party to this crime!” on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 36 for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ are held on November 22, 2018. The court sentenced Güven Gürkan Öztan, Gülhan Türkay and Mehmet Rıza Türkay to 1 year and 3 months each for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ and deterred the announcement of the verdict.

The case against Assist. Professor M.T.T. from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University for the same reason on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 26 is held on November 22, 2018. The court decided to consolidate the case with other cases opened for the same reason.

The separate cases against 2 academicians (Akın Tek from Istanbul Şehir University and PhD student Özgecan Korkmaz from Michigan University) for the same reason on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 26 is held on November 13, 2018. The court adjourned both trials to February 14, 2019.

(11/285) Lawyer on Trial in Şırnak…

Lawyer Filiz Özmez, who went to Cizre and take photographs of racist and sexist writings on the walls, on March 2, 2016 after the curfew, was subjected to physical violence of special task force police Halil Alkan. A case as opened against Filiz Özmez upon the official complaint made by the police officer.

The final trial of the case against lawyer Filiz Özmez on the charges of ‘insulting a public official’ and ‘threat’ is held on November 22, 2018 on Cizre Penal Court of First Instance No 2. The court sentenced Filiz Özmez to 15 months and converted the sentence to a fine of 9.000 Turkish Liras.

The court imposed a fine of 3.000 Turkish Liras on Halil Alkan for ‘intentional injury’ and deterred the announcement of the verdict.

(11/286) Journalists on Trial in Ankara…

The case against 11 people including journalists Sibel Hürtaş and Hayri Demir, Özgürlükçü Demokrasi newspaper employee Barış Ceyhan and Human Rights Association (İHD) executive board member Nuray Çevirmen, for their news reports and social media posts on Turkish Armed Forces’ military operation to Afrin, is held on November 22, 2018 on Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 15.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to January 22, 2019.

3 people (Barış Ceyhan, Saim Serin and Lezgin Tekay) who were arrested through the case were released on the trial held on September 6, 2018. The court has separated the case of HDP MP Kemal Bülbül.

(11/287) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The case against Cumhuriyet newspaper reporter Pelin Ünker, for the official complaints of Beratl Albayrak and Serhat Albayrak about her news reports on ‘Paradise Papers’ is held on November 22, 2018 on Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2.

The court postponed to decide on the demand for consolidation of the case with other cases against Pelin Ünker and adjourned the trial to February 21, 2019.

(11/288) Translator on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against translator/interpreter Sebla Küçük, on the grounds of translating new reports covered by English sources on Turkish Armed Forces’ military operation to Afrin and sharing these news reports on social media, is held on November 22, 2018 on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 35. The court acquitted Sebla Küçük on account of no element of crime found.

(11/289) Lawyer on Trial in Istanbul…

The case against lawyer Veysel Ok from The Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA), on the grounds of ‘publicly degrading the judicial bodies of the state’ is held on Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 37 on November 22, 2018. The court addressed Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2 as the court authorized for “crimes committed through media” and ruled to lack of jurisdiction.

(11/290) Suruç Massacre Case…

The case on Urfa Heavy Penal Court No 5, for the massacre in Suruç where 33 people died on July 20, 2015, continued to be held on November 22, 2018. After complainant declarations and defence hearings the court decided to continue detention for Yakup Şahin, the only arrested defendant of the case, and rejected the demand of consolidation of the case with the case on Suruç Penal Court of First Instance against 2 police officers on the charge of impeachment, and adjourned the trial to February 12, 2019.

On November 22, 2018 Murat Yeni, a TV host in Istanbul and 3 people in Bolu are detained.

(11/292) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against Şuayip Şen, former member of the Supreme Court who is dismissed by a state of emergency decree, is held on November 22, 2018 on Penal Department No 9 of the Supreme Court. The court sentenced Şen to 7 years and 6 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and decided to continue detention.
