(08/127) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned from news coverage of August 15, 2018 that 1 militant died in a clash in rural areas of Pülümür district of Tunceli on August 11, 2018.

It is learned from news coverage of August 15, 2018 that Turkish Air Force has bombed Shingal area in Iraq.

(08/128) Prevention of Right to Health of Pregnant Prisoners…

It is learned from news coverage of August 15, 2018 that, 4 pregnant prisoners, Merve Aydeniz Çokyılmaz in Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison, Mualla Kübra Alvar in Tarsus Prison, Elif Aydın in Gebze Prison and Emine Ay in Bitlis Prison, are not being taken to hospital regularly, and are kept in overcapacity and unhygienic wards. It is reported that, Merve Aydeniz Çokyılmaz (8,5 months pregnant) has infection due to unhygienic conditions; Mualla Kübra Alvar (7 months pregnant) has lesions in her body due to unhygienic conditions and high temperatures and is still not being taken to hospital; and Emine Ay (4 months pregnant) has a risk of miscarriage.

(08/129) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling for a while to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on August 15, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on August 15, 2018, 2 people (Mahmut Konuk and Gülnaz Bozkurt) and at 18.00 3 people (Acun Karadağ, Bülent Özgül and Mahir Kılıç) were detained. It is learned that the police intervened journalists and people around who follow and watch the press declaration too.

Thus in total 5 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on August 15, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

The police prevented press declaration about the financial crisis to be held by Confederation of Public Employees Trade Union (KESK), on August 15, 2018 at Ulus Square in Ankara, based on lack of permission by Ankara Governorate.

(08/132) Detained Executives of HDP and DBP in Diyarbakır…

Edip Berk, former HDP MP; Gülşen Özer former Diyarbakır co-chair of HDP; and Zeki Baran, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) party assembly member, who were detained in Diyarbakır, on August 13, 2018 for their speeches at Newroz celebrations in Bingöl, are released by the court on August 15, 2018. It is learned that Edip Berk is released on juridical control conditions.

On August 15, 2018, at least 20 people including HDP provincial co-chair Sevgi Aktaş are detained in house raids in Mersin. The names of detainees known so far are: HDP Mersin co-chair Sevgi Aktaş, provincial executives İlhami Yurtsever, Mehmet Koçak, Nasih Çetinkaya; and Kadri Beştaş, Dilan Hazar, Ferhat Pişgin.

24 people including Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Doğubayazıt district co-chairs Fatma Oral and Ahmet Şah Sarı, are detained in house raids in Doğubayazıt, Diyadin, Patnos and Eleşkirt districts of Ağrı on August 15, 2018.

Önder Eraldemir, a member of Labour Party (EMEP) is detained on the grounds of his social media posts in İzmir on August 15, 2018. It is learned that Önder Eraldemir’s house was searched and his mobile phone was seized however; no more detail is known since the case is confidential.

Fuat Şengül, former Manisa chair of Labour Party (EMEP), who was detained on August 15, 2018 on the grounds of his social media posts is released by the court on juridical control conditions the same day.

5 people are detained in house raids in Konya on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ on social media posts, on August 15, 2018.

2 people (university student S. Ö. and A. A.) are detained in house raids in Kayseri on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ on social media posts, on August 15, 2018.

(08/139) Detentions and Arrests…

It is learned from news coverage of August 16, 2018 that, 6 people including children (Nihat Demir, Veysi Demir, Ziya Kartal, F.Ç., N.Ç., K.T.) are detained in house raids in Istanbul; at least 4 people (Nurettin Bayık, Hanife Sakin, Adil Çömlek and Faruk Cilasun) in house raids in Cizre district of Şırnak; and 3 people (Emre Vural, Mahmut Ulaş and Engin Karşılayan) in house raids in Kahta district of Adıyaman are detained on August 15, 2018.

A person named Sevim Sütçü is detained at the entrance of Osmaniye T Type Prison where she was to visit her sibling on August 15, 2018. It is learned that Sevim Sütçü is taken to Osmaniye Police Headquarters however the reason for detention is unknown.

(08/140) Human Rights Defenders on Trial…

Lawyer Taner Kılıç, Amnesty International Turkey Honorary Chair, who was the only arrested defendant of the case on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 35, against 11 human rights defenders, is released interim decision of the court in regular case review on August 15, 2018.

Taner Kılıç had been arrested on June 9, 2017 and his case was consolidated with the case of human rights defenders. The court had released Taner Kılıç on trial held on January 31, 2018, but the objection of the prosecutor’s office was approved by a higher court and Taner Kılıç was arrested once again before being released from the prison.

(08/141) Co-Mayor on Trial…

The case against Nurhayat Altun, Tunceli co-mayor, on Tunceli Heavy Penal Court No 1 is held on July 15, 2018. The indictment demands Nurhayat Altun to be sentenced up to 22 years on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’, for 22 press declarations, demonstrations and funeral services she attended and for her activities in Democratic Society Congress. Nurhayat Altun did not attend the trial. After defence hearings by the lawyers the court decided to continue detention for Nurhayat Altun and adjourned the trial to October 10, 2018. Nurhayat Altun was arrested on November 17, 2016 and a trustee was appointed for Tunceli municipality on the same day.

(08/143) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against 222 defendants including 86 arrestees, on Sakarya Heavy Penal Court No 2 is held on August 15, 2018. The court sentenced 2 defendants Colonel Uğur Coşkun, Deputy Commander of Motorized Infantry Brigade No 1 and Colonel Ahmet Üzer, Commander of Central Headquarters) to heavy life penalty for ‘violating the constitution’, and to 95 years 17 months and 15 days each for ‘attempt of wilful murder’ for 13 times. The court sentenced Uğur Coşkun to 15 years for ‘leading an illegal organisation’ and Ahmet Üzer to 6 years for ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court sentenced 56 defendants to jail penalties differing from 6 years and 3 months to 13 years and 4 months for ‘attempt of demolishing the constitutional order’ and ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court sentenced 9 people to 5 months for ‘jeopardizing public safety by using firearms on purpose’ and deferred the announcement of the verdict. The court acquitted 164 people and released 2 people.
