(08/114) Wounded Children Due to Explosion in Batman…

4 children (H. D. (12), M. D. (6), S. D. (4) and E. D. (9)) were wounded due to an unaccounted explosion in a house yard in Yeşiltepe neighbourhood of Batman’s central district on August 14, 2018. It is learned that 2 of wounded children are in serious condition. Batman Governorate declared that 2 children were discharged from hospital after outpatient treatment, and 2 children are still in the hospital for treatment and have no risk of death.

(08/115) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned that a marble quarry in Kömür town of Adıyaman’s central district was raided by a group alleged to be HPG militants and construction equipment in the quarry were burned down on August 14, 2018. It is reported that 2 soldiers were wounded in the bombing attack against the military vehicle which arrived there to intervene.

(08/116) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from news coverage of August 14, 2018 that, Uğur Yeloğlu, an ill prisoner who had been detained and arrested in January 2018 in Mardin, has psychological problems which got worse due to being subjected to torture under custody and being kept in solitary cell for more than 2 months in prisons; and that Uğur Yeloğlu lost his memory and cannot meet his own needs because of this. It is also stated in the news reports that the indictment of Uğur Yeloğlu’s case was still not prepared for 7 months, and that the appeal for him being treated in a general hospital is not responded yet.

Journalist Mehmet Güleş, who is kept in Elazığ High Security Prison No 1, revealed the violations in prison in his letter to press which was covered on August 14, 2018. According to his letter, 30 prisoners including 1 ill prisoner are kept in solitary cells under coercion; letters written by prisoners and letters sent to prisoners in Kurdish are not sent and delivered; cargo packages are given to prisoners with a 3-weeks delay.

(08/117) Prevention of Infant’s Right to Health in Prison…

It is learned from news coverage of August 14, 2018 that A. Y. (1), health condition of an infant with asthma who is kept in Urfa T Type Prison No 2 with her mother Esma Yılmaz, is getting worse because her regular medication is not given and losing weight. It is stated in the news reports that A. Y. should have been transferred to hospital on August 5, 2018 however, was not taken to hospital yet.

(08/118) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling for a while to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on August 14, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on August 14, 2018, 3 people (Mahmut Konuk, Gülnaz Bozkurt and a theatre player from İdil Folk Drama Group) and at 18.00 2 people (Acun Karadağ and Metin Kılıç) were detained.

Thus in total 5 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on August 14, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

Haydar Yüksel, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Çukurova district co-chair who was detained on August 12, 2018 in Edirne, is arrested by the court on August 14, 2018.

(08/120) Former HDP Executive Detained in Edirne…

Şamil Altan, former Istanbul provincial co-chair of HDP, is detained in Keşan district of Edirne on August 14, 2018. Şamil Altan had been detained and arrested in Istanbul on February 7, 2018 and has been released by the court on a trial held on June 28, 2018.

(08/121) Detained Members and Executives of HDP in Ankara…

7 people including district and provincial executives of HDP are detained in house raids in Ankara on August 14, 2018. The names of detainees are: HDP Ankara provincial executive Mahmut Emin Avcı, HDP MP candidate and former spokesperson of Ankara Women’s Assembly İpek Gür, HDP Çankaya district co-chair Ramazan Karakoç, HDP Keçiören district executives Figen Öncü and Gülhan Akıncı, peace mothers Kadriye Ozgan and Minibe Koç.

(08/122) Detained People for ‘Social Media Posts’ in Bursa…

On August 14, 2018, 2 people are detained in house raids in Bursa, for their social media posts about Newroz celebration in Bursa.

(08/123) Detentions and Arrests…

On August 14, 2018, 6 people in house raids in Antep; 9 people in house raids in Menemen district of İzmir; and 14 people including 4 children in house raids in Adana (the names of detainees known so far are: Halit Şaşmaz, Serhat Tatlı, Salih Filiztek, Baver Şahin and Barış Aydın) are detained.

(08/124) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On August 14, 2018, 33 people are detained in operations covering 15 cities through an Istanbul based investigation.

8 people including 1 former police chief dismissed by a state of emergency decree and 2 soldiers who were detained through an Izmir based investigation on August 7, 2018; are arrested by the court on August 14, 2018.

It is learned from news coverage of August 14, 2018 that, within 2 years following the coup attempt on July 15, 2016; 154 people in alleged attempts to illegally cross to Greece and Bulgaria are detained based on detention warrants though “Fethullahist Terrorist Organisation / Parallel State Structure Investigations”.

(08/125) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The case against journalist Mehmet Gündem on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 35, started on August 14, 2018. Mehmet Gündem attended the trial for defence hearings. The court decided to continue detention for Mehmet Gündem and adjourned the trial to October 30, 2018.

Mehmet Gündem, former writer of Milliyet newspaper, had been detained on November 1, 2017, through an investigation on Journalists and Writers Foundation which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, and had been arrested on November 10, 2017.

(08/126) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against Cem Şemsettin Ekinci, on the charge of ‘being illegal organisation executive responsible for Turkish Directorate of Religious Affairs’, on Antep Heavy Penal Court No 8 is held on August 14, 2018. The court sentenced Cem Şemsettin Ekinci to 8 years and 9 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’.
