(08/104) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned from news coverage of August 13, 2018 that, 1 militant (İbrahim Çoban) died in a clash between security forces and HPG militants in rural areas of Pülümür district of Tunceli on August 11, 2018.

It is learned from news coverage of August 13, 2018 that, the forest fire which started approximately one week ago in rural areas of Hozat district of Tunceli, is still spreading and that the villagers are prevented by security forces from fighting the fire. It is claimed in news reports that the fired started due to land and air bombardment of security forces.

(08/105) People Being Forced to be Informants…

It is learned from news coverage of August 13, 2018 that, 19 people in Izmir, have been subjected to threats, blackmailing, psychological pressure and have been forced to be informants, by individuals who claim to be police officers, within July and August.

It is reported that Serhat Koçer and Furkan Temelli, who were called by unknown people claiming to be police officers, applied to Human Rights Association (IHD) Izmir branch.

Serhat Koçer (22), states for the news reports that, he was called on July 21, 2018 for the first time and was asked to Buca District Police Headquarters. Serhat Koçer also adds that, the people he talked at the police headquarters told him that he “is accompanying wrong people and should quit these friendships”.  Serhat Koçer told following about what happened afterwards: “They wanted to meet outside. When I ask the reason they did not tell (…) I did not go to meet them in case anything would happen to me. And then they kept calling me. I had a message from the number they have been calling through. It was saying ‘Why don’t you answer’”.

Furkan Temelli, states that he was called by a person claiming to be a police officer, on July 17, 2018 for the first time, and that this person wanted to meet him personally but he refused to do so. Upon rejecting to meet the police officer, Furkan Temelli states that he got threatening messages from the same number such as “We do not want to come and take you from your workplace for an easy issue. Act proper and answer”, “I would not talk to you in this way if we meet in another place (…) If you don’t want anything to happen to you, if you don’t want your mother, father and siblings to be upset, you should help us so that we would help you too”.

(08/106) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling for a while to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on August 13, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on August 13, 2018, 2 people (Engin Karataş, Mehmet Dersulu) and at 18.00 2 people (Acun Karadağ and Engin Karataş) were detained.

Thus in total 4 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on August 13, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(08/107) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

On August 13, 2018, the police intervened into the sit-in protest of public labourers who made a press declaration to regain their jobs from which they had been dismissed by state of emergency decrees, at Bakırköy Square in Istanbul; and detained 2 people (Nursel Tanrıverdi, Selvi Polat) by physical violence.

Nursel Tanrıverdi and Selvi Polat are released by the court on August 14, 2018, on juridical control conditions and with ban on leaving the country.

Nursel Tanrıverdi and Selvi Polat have been detained through the police intervention against sit-in protest on August 6, 2018; and have been referred to the court. The court has released them on August 7, 2018 on condition that they are banned from getting closer to Bakırköy Square less than 200 meters.

(08/108) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened into the protest of public employees to regain their jobs from which they had been dismissed by state of emergency decrees, in front of Çankaya Public Health Center on August 13, 2018 and detained 3 people (Engin Karataş, Eser Budak and Mahmut Konuk). It is learned that the detainees were released the same day.

(08/109) Detained HDP Executive in Diyarbakır…

Edip Berk, former MP of HDP; and Gülşen Özer, party assembly member of HDP, are detained in house raid in Diyarbakır on August 13, 2018. It is reported that Edip Berk and Gülşen Özer are detained for their speeches at Newroz celebrations in Bingöl in 2018.

(08/110) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On August 13, 2018, 9 people including dismissed academicians by state of emergency decrees are detained in Ankara through an investigation on Hacettepe University employees; 7 people are detained in operations covering 9 cities through a Malatya based investigation and Atilla Eser, a former first rank police chief is detained based on a warrant in Ankara.

(08/111) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against İsmail Nacak, former investigation judge, on Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 28 is held on August 13, 2018. The court sentenced İsmail Nacak to 8 years 1 month and 15 days for ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

The final trial of the case against 108 defendants including 20 arrestees and business people, on Aydın Heavy Penal Court No 2 is held on August 13, 2018. The court sentenced 63 people to jail penalties differing from 2 years 1 month to 12 years for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘aiding an organisation member’. The court acquitted 11 defendants. The court has separated the cases of 34 defendants including 2 arrestees, at the previous trial based on completion of collecting evidence. The court decided to released 11 arrested defendants and to arrest 1 defendant upon the verdict.

The final trial of the case against 14 employees of TUBITAK (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) on Kocaeli Heavy Penal Court No 5 is held on August 13, 2018. The court sentenced 12 defendants to jail penalties differing from 1 year 8 months 18 days to 10 years. The court acquitted 1 defendant and separated the case of 1 defendant.

(08/112) Suspended Prosecutor…

It is learned from news coverage of August 13, 2018 that, Keşan district public prosecutor Muhammet Ali Akkuş is suspended by Department No 2 of Judges and Prosecutors Council on the grounds of ‘using ByLock’.

(08/113) Investigated Social Media Accounts…

It is learned from news coverage of August 13, 2018 that, 346 social media accounts are being investigated on the charge of ‘sharing posts to provoke the raise in exchange rate of dollar and to create a specific perception on social media’.

It is also stated in news reports that Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) initiated an investigation about social media posts stating foreign deposits will be exchanged to Turkish Liras and currency will be pegged.
