(07/143) Person Died in Police Operation in Manisa…

It is learned from news coverage of July 12, 2018 that 1 person died in a clash during a police raid to a house through an investigation against drug traffickers in Şehzadeler district of Manisa. It is reported that 1 more person was wounded in the operation and was detained. The names of the person died and the detainees are not declared by Manisa Police Directorate yet.

(07/144) Prisoner Died in Prison…

It is learned from news coverage of July 12, 2018 that Nesrin Gençosman (30), a woman prisoner who has been kept in Ordu Prison for almost two months, was taken to hospital when her health condition gets worse, and died after a week there. It is claimed in the news reports that Nesrin Gençosman got pneumonia in prison, and her medication was not given due to weekend.

It is learned from news coverage of July 12, 2018 that, İsmet Karak, a prisoner from Erzincan T Type Prison, was put in a single cell because he rejects to stand in military order during roll-calls.

(07/146) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned from news coverage of July 12, 2018 that 2 militants died in a clash between security forces and HPG militants in Tunceli on June 2, 2018; 3 militants died in a clash in Bitlis on June 26, 2018, and 2 militants died in a clash in Van on June 30, 2018.

It is learned from news coverage that a fire started in forests in Lis Mountain, during a military operation in rural areas of Diyarbakır’s Kulp district. It is claimed in the news reports that security forces prevented the villagers from fighting the fire.

(07/147) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling for a while to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on July 12, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on July 12, 2018, 5 people (Mehmet Dersulu, Derviş Lermi, Gülnaz Bozkurt, Cafer Keleş, Cengiz Çağlar) and at 18.00 5 people (Gülnaz Bozkurt, İlker Işık, Derviş Lermi, Deniz Yılmaz and Cengiz Tepe) were detained.

Thus in total 10 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on July 12, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(07/148) News Agency Office Raided in Diyarbakır…

The office of Jinnews news agency in Bağlar district of Diyarbakır is raided by the police on July 12, 2018. It is learned that the police raided the office while there was nobody in, and seized computers after searching the office. It is learned that lawyers of Jinnews will made an official complaint to the prosecutor’s office.

(07/149) People Detained in Şırnak…

It is learned that 16 people were detained in house raids in Kovankaya village of Şırnak’s Beytüşşebap district on July 12, 2018. It is learned that 3 of 16 detainees are French citizens. It is learned that 16 people were detained for ‘aiding an illegal organisation’ and taken to Şırnak Gendarmerie Command.

(07/150) Police Officers on Trial for Death of 2 Children Due to Run Over of a Police Armoured Vehicle…

On May 3, 2017, Muhammed Yıldırım (7) and Furkan Yıldırım (6) died because a police armoured vehicle destroyed the wall of their house in Silopi district of Şırnak. The case on death of 2 children, against Ömer Yeğit, driver of the armoured vehicle and Murat Maden, the police chief who charged Ömer Yeğit, on Cizre Heavy Penal Court No 2 is held on July 12, 2018.

The indictment demands jail penalty between 2 and 15 years for 2 defendants for ‘killing of more than one person by gross negligence’.

After witness hearing of two police officers who were on duty in Silopi Police Headquarters back then, lawyers of Yıldırım family demanded that Tuncay Taşdemir, one of the witness police officers and Selçuk Erdoğan, police chief of Silopi district in those days, should be involved in the case as defendants.

The court decided that crime scene investigation, which was decided by the court previously but not carried out for three times, will be carried out on September 19, 2018. The court rejected the demand for involving Tuncay Taşdemir and Selçuk Erdoğan as defendants, and adjourned the trial to October 25, 2018.

(07/151) The Cases Against Academics Who Are the Signatories of the Petition “We will not be a party to this crime!”…

The separate cases against 4 academicians (dismissed lecturer Cansever Güner and Professor Hatice Günay Özdoğan from Marmara University, PhD Ali Serdar from Özyeğin University, Assoc. Professor Ayşe Serdar from Istanbul Technical University) for signing the petition “We will not be a party to this crime!” on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 35 for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ is held on July 12, 2018. The court decided to consolidate the cases against Hatice Günay Özdoğan, Ali Serdar, Ayşe Serdar with other cases on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 35, and adjourned the trials to October 18, 2018. The court decided to hear Cansever Güner’s defence in the city he lives upon direction, and adjourned the trial to September 22, 2018.

(07/152) Lawyers on Trial in Istanbul…

The case against 9 lawyers (Kemal Aytaç, Gökmen Yeşil, Diren Yeşil, Hatice Nur Gök, İsmail Anıl Başoğlu, Kıvanç Kayaoğlu, Özge Serdar, Erkan Ünüvar and Sevinç Sarıkaya) for ‘resisting to the police’, on Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 50, started on July 12, 2018.

After hearings, the court decided to hear 3 complainant police officers as witnesses and adjourned the trial to October 12, 2018.

The case was opened against 9 lawyers, after police intervention to justice watch in front of Istanbul Courthouse on April 6, 2018, to protest arrest of writers and executives of Cumhuriyet newspaper. Gökmen Yeşil and Erkan Ünüvar, 2 lawyers were injured in police intervention, however the official complaint made on this was concluded as non-prosecution.

(07/153) Co-Mayors on Trial…

The case against 50 people including Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Co-mayor Fırat Anlı, on Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8 is held on July 12, 2018. The indictment demands sentence for defendants for the construction works in Sheikh Said cemetery and drilling a borehole for water supply. The court rejected the demand of lifting juridical control conditions for some of the defendants and adjourned the trial to December 2018.

(07/154) Singer on Trial for ‘Insulting the President’…

Penal Department No 2 of Istanbul Regional Court, reversed the 10 months’ sentence given by Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 46, to singer Zuhal Olcay, on the grounds that she insulted the President in a concert. Penal Department No 2 of Istanbul Regional Court sentenced Zuhal Olcay to 11 months and 20 days on the grounds that she committed ‘insulting the President’ crime in public. The court postponed the sentence and decided to apply probation to Zuhal Olcay for 1 year and 6 months.

(07/155) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On July 12, 2018, 11 military members including 10 on active duty in operations covering 4 cities through an Eskişehir based investigation; 13 people in house raids in Izmir; 8 people in house raids in Antalya; 4 people in Muğla in alleged attempt to illegally flee to Greece; and 2 people in Edirne in alleged attempt to illegally flee to Greece.

It is learned from news coverage of July 12, 2018 that in 2 operations of National Intelligence Service, İsa Özdemir was captured in Azerbaijan and Salih Zeki Yiğit was captured in Ukraine and they both were taken back to Turkey.

1 person detained in Karaman is arrested by the court on July 12, 2018.

(07/156) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against 143 people including 133 arrestees, for the incidents where 34 people died on Istanbul Bosphorus Bridge during July 15 coup attempt, on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 25, is held on July 12, 2018. The court sentenced 72 defendants to heavy life penalty for ‘violating the Constitution’; 27 defendants to jail penalties between 15 years and 17 years and 6 months for ‘aiding the attempt to demolish the constitutional order’. The court sentenced some of the defendants to several times of life penalty for ‘wilful murder’ of several people. The court sentenced 24 defendants to different jail penalties for ‘attempting wilful murder in order to conceal a crime, to destroy the evidence, to ease the crime or not to get caught’, ‘deprivation of liberty’ and ‘intentional injury’. The court acquitted 44 defendants.

The final trial of the case against former executives of Boydak Holding, Mustafa Boydak, Bekir Boydak, Erol Boydak, İlyas Boydak, Murat Bozdağ, Halit Bayhan, Memduh Boydak, Hacı Boydak and Şükrü Boydak, on Kayseri Heavy Penal Court No 2 is held on July 12, 2018. The court sentenced Memduh Boydak to 18 years for ‘leading an illegal organisation’; Hacı Boydak, Şükrü Boydak, Mustafa Boydak, Bekir Boydak, Erol Boydak, İlyas Boydak and Murat Bozdağ to jail penalties differing from 7 years and 6 months to 11 years 10 months and 15 days for ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court acquitted Halit Bayhan, and decided to confiscate the share of those sentenced in holdings and companies directed by TMSF (Saving Deposit Insurance Fund).

The final trial of the case against 8 people on Denizli Heavy Penal Court No 2 is held on July 12, 2018. The court sentenced 7 defendants to jail penalties differing from 1 year and 6 months to 8 years and 9 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court acquitted 1 defendant.

The final trial of the case against 7 people on Malatya Heavy Penal Court No 2 is held on July 12, 2018. The court sentenced 3 defendants to jail penalties differing from 6 years and 3 months to 8 years and 9 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’; 3 defendants to jail penalties differing from 2 years and 1 month to 2 years and 7 months and 7 days for ‘aiding an illegal organisation’.

The final trial of the case against 1 person on Malatya Heavy Penal Court No 1 is held on July 12, 2018. The court sentenced the defendant to 2 years and 1 month for ‘aiding an illegal organisation’.
