(01/068) Curfew in Cizre…

Curfew and blockade in Cizre district of Şırnak reached its 31st day as of 13 January 2016. And the operations and attacks of the Security Forces continued.

Veysi Elçi who was heavily wounded on 12 January 2016 for being shot in his house in Şah quarter died in the hospital.

ECtHR rejected the interlocutory injunction demand for the curfews.

(01/069) House Raid and Stop Warning in Mardin…

An armed clash was allegedly broke out on 12 January 2016 in Turgut Özal quarter of Kızıltepe district in Mardin. According to the official announcement by the Governorate of Mardin, Security Forces opened fire against a vehicle on the allegations of “not obeying the stop warning” and 2 militants were killed. Security Forces also conducted a house raid in Medya quarter and 2 alleged militants were killed. 1 militant was also captured.

According to the local sources, 4 unidentified persons were allegedly killed when Special Forces opened fire against a vehicle.

One of the killed persons was reportedly identified by his relatives as Democratic Regions Party (DBP) executive for the district Cengiz Erdem.

(01/070) Bomb Attack in İstanbul…

A suicidal bomb attack was organised on 12 January 2016 on the touristic Sultanahmet Square in Fatih district of İstanbul.

The attack was organised by Saudi Arabia born Syrian citizen Nabil Fadlı (27) and the bomb exploded in a tourist group nearby the German Fountain. 10 tourists died, 15 persons were wounded during the attack.

The names of the killed tourists were announced as Gerhard Günther Höppner, Steffen Höppner, Rudolf Krollman, Hiltrud Krollman, Karin Erika Franke-Dütz, Rüdiger Karl Faber, Marianne Faber, Gernot Eike Mildner, Adolf Jurgen Glorius, Rudiger Becker.

RTÜK (supreme board of radio and television) imposed temporary ban on publication about the attack.

Hasan Han (65) was killed on 12 January 2016 in Yüksekova district of Hakkari when an armoured police vehicle ran over his head.

1 soldier was reportedly wounded during an armed clash on 12 January 2016 in Sur district of Diyarbakır.

(01/073) Ekrem Kaçeroğlu Case…

İzmir Heavy Penal Court No 8 continued on 12 January 2016 to hear the case against 4 persons without remand launched in connection with lynching Ekrem Kaçaroğlu (38). The indictment wants the defendants Reşit A. (29), Kubilay A. (19), Suat D. and Murat K. (27) to be sentenced to life imprisonment for “intentional killing” according to the Article 81 TPC.

Ekrem Kaçaroğlu (38) who was shot and heavily wounded by the police on 7 October 2014 during a demonstration in Bornova district of İzmir was lynched by civilians. He died on 19 October 2014 at the hospital.

The court decided the footages of the incident to be examined by the gendarmerie criminal laboratory before further crime scene investigation. The court also rejected the demand for the arrest of the defendants and adjourned the hearing to 13 April 2016.

(01/074) Lawyers Beaten in İstanbul…

The lawyers Ahmet Özcan and Güneş Yağcı, members of Association of Lawyers for Freedom (Özgürlükçü Hukukçular Derneği – ÖHD), were reportedly beaten in Sultanbeyli Security Directorate. The lawyers wanted to see their clients who were recently detained in İstanbul. They were attacked and beaten, when they objected the police for not allowing them.

According to the news appeared in the press on 12 January 2016, Sedat Kaynar incarcerated in Yenişehir (Bursa) Prison for a murder case allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his cell.

(01/076) Protest in Prison…

According to the news appeared in the press on 12 January 2016, the prisoner Mehmet Çoku incarcerated in Edirne F-type Prison set himself to fire. The guards intervened the incident. He was allegedly kept in a single-cell since the incident and no information about his health condition was provided by the prison administration.

(01/077) Columnist Acquitted…

Bakırköy (İstanbul) Penal Court of First Instance No 2 concluded on 12 January 2016 to hear the case against Mümtazer Türköne, columnist with the daily Zaman, launched for using the word “necrophile” targeting Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in his column “Would it be worse if he wasn’t obliged to? (Mecbur olmasa bu kadar kötü olur mu?)” dating 16 March 2014.

After the final statements as to the accusations, the court acquitted the defendant. The indictment wanted the defendant to be sentenced according to the Article 125 TPC for “insulting public officer”.

(01/078) Co-Mayor on Trial…

Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 started on 12 January 2016 to hear the case Diyarbakır Co-Mayor Gültan Kışanak launched on charges of “being member of an illegal organisation”.

The court decided the case to be combined with the ongoing KCK Main Trial at the Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 2.

The indictment wants Gültan Kışanak to be sentenced to a term of imprisonment up to 10 years on the allegations that she was an active member of the Free Women Congress (KJA/Kongra Jınên Azad/Özgür Kadın Kongresi).

(01/079) Political Party Premises Raided in Muş…

The police raided Democratic Regions Party (DBP) premises and houses on 12 January 2016 in Varto district of Muş. 9 persons were detained during the operations.

(01/080) Campaign Prevented…

On 12 January 2016, the police intervened the members of Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) who initiated a campaign with the slogan “Peoples’ Peace against the War of the Palace” in Kadıköy district of İstanbul. 4 members of ESP were detained during the intervention.

(01/081) Operations throughout Turkey…

Eser Koçbaş and Azad İmal who were among 3 persons detained during operations in Bursa were arrested on 12 January 2016 on the allegations of “being member of an illegal organisation”.

K.A. (10) and mentally retarded E.S. (13) were detained in Hacıahmet quarter of Beyoğlu district in İstanbul on the allegations of “throwing stones against the police”.

3 persons were reportedly detained in Şemdinli district of Hakkari. The reason of the detention was not disclosed.

İbrahim Açıkgöz, worker in Selahaddin Eyyubi State Hospital and member of the union in health sector SES, was detained on 12 January 2016 when the police raided the hospital.
