(01/061) Curfew in Cizre…

Curfew and blockade in Cizre district of Şırnak reached its 30th day as of 12 January 2016. And the operations and attacks of the Security Forces continued.

Garip Mubarız (18) was shot to death during the operations conducted on 11 January 2016 in Cudi quarter. 2 unidentified persons were also wounded during the incident.

(01/062) Operations and Attacks in the Southeast…

2 soldiers were wounded during an armed clash that broke out on 11 January 2016 in Hasırlı quarter of Sur district in Diyarbakır.

1 police officer was killed, 1 police officer and 2 soldiers were wounded during an armed on 12 January 2016 in Nur quarter of Cizre district in Şırnak where curfew was imposed.

(01/063) Persons Wounded by the Police in Van…

An unidentified person was opened fire by the Security Forces on 11 January 2016 nearby Xavis village of Tuşba district in Van. According to the news appeared in the press, the person did not obey stop warning on a control point. He kept driving for a while and then left the vehicle to escape on foot. He was shot and wounded. The person reportedly was a border trader and detained.

(01/064) Ethem Sarısülük Case…

Aksaray Heavy Penal Court started on 11 January 2016 to hear the retrial of police officer Ahmet Şahbaz launched in connection with the killing of Ethem Sarısülük on 1 June 2013 during Gezi Park demonstrations in Ankara.

The case was transferred from Ankara to Aksaray for security reasons. The rejected the demand for the arrest of the defendant and adjourned the hearing to 4 April 2016.

Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 6 concluded on 3 September 2014 to hear the case against police officer Ahmet Şahbaz and reduced at first the life imprisonment for “intentional killing” to 21 years for “killing someone with possible intention”. The court increased the sentence to 28 years for committing the crime on duty. But then the sentence was reduced to 7 years 9 months 10 days relying on “unjust provocation”, “good conduct of the defendant at the hearings” and “matter of discretional extenuation”.

1st Penal Chamber at the Court of Cassation quashed the verdict on procedural grounds and did not deal with the merits of the case. The Chamber also rejected the release demand of Ahmet Şahbaz. But Ahmet Şahbaz was released on 3 September 2015 to be tried without remand.

(01/065) Persons Beaten by the Police in Siirt…

The groups from several provinces who were on their way to Cizre and Silopi where curfew was imposed were prevented by the police on 11 January 2015 in Siirt. According to the footages revealed, an unidentified male was detained after being beaten by some 20 police officers for minutes.

(01/066) Protest Intervened in Van…

The police intervened a group of persons who wanted to stage a sit-in action on 11 January 2016 on Beşyol Square in Van to protest in the killings of 12 persons during a house raid in Edremit district. The police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. 20 persons including Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) MP Lezgin Botan and Van Co-Mayor Bekir Kaya were wounded during the police intervention and 15 persons were detained.

Anti-Terror branch conducted a house raid on 12 January 2016 in Kocaeli and detained 10 members of Socialist Youth Association (Sosyalist Gençlik Derneği).
