(12/142) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 10, 2018 that, 3 prisoners (Mehmet Çağırıcı, Bahri Sulgin and Ümit Karakaya) in Giresun E Type Prison who went on a hunger strike demanding an end to the isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, are penalised with deprivation from communication rights for 3 months.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 10, 2018 that 2 prisoners (Suzan Çay and Dizle Nur) are transferred under coercion from Urfa T Type Prison No 2 to Elazığ T Type Prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 10, 2018 that 3 prisoners (Aydemir Oran, Sinan Durmaz and Fahrettin Taş) in Erzurum H Type Prison are being kept in solitary cells. It is also stated in the news reports that other prisoners in wards went on a hunger strike on December 7, 2018 to protest this and other right violations.

(12/143) Police Operation Against “I Want My Job Back” Protestors…

On December 10, 2018, 15 people are detained in house raids in Ankara, through an investigation on participators of “I Want My Job Back” protests which is being held in Yüksel Street in Ankara for 762 days so far. It is learned that 15 people are detained on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The names of detainees are: Deniz Aydın, Murat Çeşme, Gülnaz Bozkurt, Mahmut Konuk, Simge Aksan, İlker Işık, Özge Çırpan, Selvi Polat, Nazan Bozkurt, Mehmet Dersulu, Ertuğrul Çağan, Sibel Balaç, Acun Karadağ, Alev Şahin, Burak Aydemir.

(12/144) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 761 days to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on December 10, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on December 10, 2018, 1 person (Abidin Sırma) and at 18.00 2 people (Bengisu Demirel and Taylan Sungur) were detained.

Thus in total 3 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on December 10, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(12/145) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

Türkan Albayrak, who was dismissed from her job at Sarıyer district Health Department, on the grounds of ‘personnel security investigation’ and ‘archive search’, on August 3, 2018; made a press declaration to regain her job on December 10, 2018 and attempted for a sit-in protest in front of Health Department. The police intervened the sit-in and detained Türkan Albayrak. It is learned that Türkan Albayrak was released the same day. It is the 57th time of detention of Türkan Albayrak.

(12/146) Detention of Members and Executives of HDP and Activists of TJA for Supporting HDP MP Leyla Güven’s Hunger Strike…

On December 10, 2018, the police raided People’s Democratic Party’s (HDP) Diyarbakır office where activists of Free Women’s Movement (TJA) started a hunger strike to support HDP Hakkari MP and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair Leyla Güven, who went on a hunger strike to protest isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and detained 25 people. The names of detainees are: Bahar Karakaş Uluğ, Yıldız Kardeş, Yüksel Almas, Nursel Akbal, Sakine Yakut, Muazzez Altınkaynak, Sevim Çoşkun, Gülistan Ekti, Zahime İnce, Fatma Yakoğlu, Perihan Karayıl, Makbule Özbek, Rahife Ergül, Sultan Aksoy, Ayhan Ateş, Hasino Güler, Hasret Akay, Hedayet Ay, Rahşan İz, Remziye Sızıcı, Müşeher Ülker, Evin Yelboğa, Jiyan Taş, Aysel Tufan, Remziye Bayram.

On December 10, 2018, the police raided People’s Democratic Party’s (HDP) Batman office where activists of Free Women’s Movement (TJA) including HDP provincial co-chair Berivan Helen Işık and Beşiri district co-mayor Dicle Erdem started a hunger strike to support hunger strike of HDP Hakkari MP and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair Leyla Güven, and detained 29 people. Berivan Helen Işık, Dicle Erdem, Ezel Aydın, Zozan Şimşek, Sedat Yıldız, Hadi Bahadır, Eyüp Yağız, Yaşar Kırca, Ahmet Yılmaz, Sıdık Topbaş, Zedan Ekmen, Osman Bozkurtaca, Songül Korkmaz, Vildan Ergül Tileği, Gülcemal Erdinç, Sabiha Ekinci, Maşallah Kaya, Menfiat Çelik, Halise Bilir, Aliya Işık, Tuğba Doğan, Elif Tiluk Timur, Şükran Çelebi, Sakina Baytar, Edibe Bilir, Sabahat Acar, Darya Arslan, Emsal Kaya and Nefiye Aktaş. 4 people (Emsal Kaya, Menfiyet Çelik, Aliye Işık and Nefiye Aktaş) are released after statement procedures at the police on December 11, 2018.

On December 11, 2018, the police raided People’s Democratic Party’s (HDP) Diyarbakır office where activists of Free Women’s Movement (TJA) started a hunger strike to support hunger strike of HDP Hakkari MP and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair Leyla Güven, and detained 14 people. The names of detainees are: Caziye Duman, Eylem Öklü, Behice Abi, Zekiye Kaya, Dilan Yıldız, Neslihan Şedal, Hatice Akdağ, Nesibe Akdağ, Eda Umaç, Leyla Böge, Hediye Kaçak, Keve Kaçak, Besra and Kudret with unknown surnames.

30 od 47 people who were detained in the police raid to HDP’s Urfa office on December 6, 2018, on the last day of the hunger strike to support HDP Hakkari MP and DTK co-chair Leyla Güven’s hunger strike, are referred to the court on December 10, 2018. The court decided to extend detention period for 30 people for 4 days. It is learned that 17 people are still at the police for statement procedures.

(12/147) Detained HDP Executive in Ankara…

HDP’s Ankara executive Abuzer Kısa is detained in a house raid in Ankara on December 10, 2018. It is learned that Kenan Kırkaya’s house was also raided through the same investigation however he was not found at home thus not detained. Kenan Kırkaya was a reporter of Dicle News Agency which was closed down by a state of emergency decree.

(12/148) The Cases Against Academics Who Are the Signatories of the Petition “We will not be a party to this crime!”…

The separate cases against 4 academicians (Assist. Professor Umut Şah and PhD Efe Arık from Arel University, Assist. Professor Reyda Ergün from Kadir Has University and Professor Taner Gören from Istanbul University) for signing the petition “We will not be a party to this crime!” on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 36 for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ are held on December 10, 2018. The court adjourned all 4 trials to January 16, 2019.

(12/149) HDP MP’s on Trial…

The final trial of the case against HDP Tunceli MP Alican Önlü, HDP Batman MP Ayşe Acar Başaran, former HDP Urfa MP Osman Baydemir and former HDP Şırnak MP Leyla Birlik, on the grounds of participating in the march in Şırnak to protest ongoing curfews in 2015, is held on Şırnak Penal Court of First Instance on December 10, 2018. The court sentenced Osman Baydemir and Leyla Birlik to 1 year and 6 months each for ‘opposing to the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’. The court decided to separate the cases of Alican Önlü and Ayşe Acar Başaran.

(12/150) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On December 10, 2018, a correction officer named Y.G. is detained in a house raid in Sivas.

Writer Talha Uğurluel, who was detained through an Erzincan based investigation is arrested by the court on December 10, 2018.

(12/151) Journalists on Trial…

The indictment of Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office Press Offences Department against 5 people including Sözcü newspaper writers Emin Çölaşan and Necati Doğru and editorial director Metin Yılmaz, is accepted by Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 37 on December 10, 2018. The indictment demands a penalty of imprisonment for a term of 7 years and 6 months to 15 years for ‘knowingly aiding an illegal organisation’. The first hearing will be held on January 18, 2019.

It is learned from the news reports that it is decided for non-prosecution for 5 people including Sözcü newspaper writers Uğur Dündar and Saygı Öztürk.

(12/152) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against 114 people for the incidents at Kuleli Military High School and Vaniköy and Beykoz during June 15 coup attempt, is held on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 32 on December 10, 2018. The court sentenced 26 people to heavy life imprisonment, 8 people to life imprisonment and 16 people to 12 years and 6 months each for ‘attempting to demolish the constitutional order’. The court acquitted 64 people.

(12/153) Investigated Social Media Accounts…

The Ministry of Interior made a declaration on December 10, 2018 and announced that 310 social media accounts were investigated between December 3 and December 10, 2018; and legal proceedings have been initiated against 238 people within this week.
